Sarah Watts advises that Spectral Immersions: A Comprehensive Guide to the Theory and Practice of Bass Clarinet Multiphonics is used alongside this book in order to fully understand both the practice and her notations.
From the composer:
"How do we teach, and how to we learn to produce and play multiphonics? Many students and players simply wait for multiphonics to appear in a piece of music, and then struggle to play them with control an success. My charts provide accurate notations, and they explain the basics, but we lack etudes that give players an opportunity to learn this technique.
Multiphonic Miniatures is a set of twenty-four 2-to-3 minute etudes. Each one features a limited number of multiphonics. Most of these are from my SW charts, but I also feature some Type 1 and close dyad multiphonics too.
The notation is free form, or graphic score based. This is because multiphonics need time and space to emerge and speak. Using traditional strict rhythmic notation complicates the learning processes, and I wanted to have a set of pieces that allows players to experiment and become comfortable with embouchure and voicing for each one.
Graphic score, free notation and improvisation is also an important skill that emerging players and students need to be familiar with, so these etudes additionally help to train musicians in different types of notation associated with new music. They also use other extended techniques and offer lots of opportunity for individual interpretation and decisions."
