This edition consists of a full score, a piano/narrator score (containing only piano part and narration text), and a set of five parts (wind quintet).Omitting the optional introduction and instrument demonstration reduces the duration by about 2.5 minutes. From the preface:"This is a story of five stray cats who have found a home in an abandoned barn. Each cat has a distinct personality, yet they have learned to get along with each other. The sudden appearance of a porcupine in their midst, however, causes some surprising problems. The five cats in the story are portrayed by the five instruments of the woodwind quintet—flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon—and each is identified by a musical motive."From the composer:"Hopefully, persons of any age will enjoy the story. The work is intended, as well, as an introduction to the woodwind quintet. This combination of unlike instruments, each with its own distinct character, can, none the less, achieve a homogenous blending of sounds. The melody of The Porcupine's Song is based on a melody composed by my daughter Linda when she was a very young girl and the piece is dedicated to her memory."
