Caroline Schleicher-Krähmer (1794 – 1873) was the first known female clarinet soloist. The present edition was edited by Nicola Buckenmaier, who has accomplished more than 15 years of research into the work and life of Schleicher-Krähmer, and is in the process of writing her biography using extensive original sources and secondary literature from the nineteenth and later centuries to inform her editorial process (check Buckenmaier's website and sign up for her newsletter for updates). For now, readers can learn more about Schleicher-Krähmer through Buckenmaier's 2019 article from the ICA, available online.
Schleicher-Krähmer's Sonatine was composed for and dedicated to her students, as indicated on the subtitle of the first edition published in 1825 ("Composée et dediée à ses èleves..."). It was previously published in a 1979 anthology by György Balassa through Editio Musica Budapest, but that edition is now out of print. Buckenmaier's present publication is based on the 1825 first edition, and presents the work with clean notation for today's musicians. It includes introductory text in English and German, as well as editorial remarks detailing the notational updates integrated into the new edition. The few dynamics and articulation markings are directly from the first edition, with none added; for the sake of better readability, missing tuplet indications were added, as well as measure numbers.
