Gioachino Rossini (1792 – 1868) was a Italian composer. The Introduction, Theme & Variations has a suggested composition year of 1809, and is dedicated to Allesandro Abate. There is currently no definitive evidence of Rossini's authorship, but it is based on two of his own opera arias (from Mosè in Egitto and La Donna de Lago). This work should not be confused with an earlier solo for C clarinet by Rossini, also titled Variations. The present work was probably originally intended for solo clarinet with orchestra, although it is very popular today in both versions. It provides plentiful opportunities for virtuosic dazzle with leaps and frequent fast passages climbing into the altissimo register, and also exemplifies the dramatic emotion of the Italian bel canto singing style.   Most of the work is in the key of B♭ major, with one variation in B♭ minor and the introduction in E♭ major.  Following the introduction in 6/8, the remainder is in 4/4 time.  The highest pitch is a written altissimo A6.

The score has a transposed clarinet part, so it is possible to read/perform directly.  This edition doesn't have any bar numbers, but you can get them right here.
