From the composer:
"In order to perform more difficult grades of music, students must have excellent technical skill and control through the full range of the instrument at a variety of dynamic levels. These skills are of particular concern where students are being asked to play more "soloistically". The patterns in this book are basic to a solid technical foundation."
This publication is a concise and focused method for building and reinforcing clarinet technique.
The bulk of the book is a set of exercises for each key signature, each two pages in length, which use carefully formulated scales, chords, and drills to test pedagogical issues:
- The Extended Scale Pattern: build recognition of scale patterns within the music, regardless of the stated key signature.
- Tonguing Burst practice: detect and correct articulation errors as well as improve speed.
- Interrupted Scale Pattern: develop even fingers, air, and tone quality through shifting registers of the clarinet.
- Register Connector/Tuning Exercises: teach instinctive adjustment to the changing tube length (response).
- Scales with shifting subdivision (ex: duples to triplets)
- Includes major, minor, and chromatic scales, as well as seventh chords
Beyond this, the book also includes a final section of suggestions for stretching the achievement level even further with articulation pattern suggestions, polytonal scales, and an "All In One" exercise "for busy people"!
