"This short solo for bass clarinet is about the birth of a star inside a nebula. The piece starts off calmly and slowly, building up gradually to a climax before eventually settling back down. This represents the humble beginnings of a star, to when there is chaos with debris all over the solar system with collisions and planets forming. At the end of this long process, millions of years, the star will finally settle into its main sequence stage in which it will remain for another 3-5 billion years."
Performance notes from the composer:
"A Stellar Prelude comes in two versions: an advanced version and an intermediate version. This is meant to give performers more options based on their skill level. The advanced version is slightly longer, and has more difficult rhythms and a wider range (though there is a cue for the altissimo A at the climax). The intermediate version is boiled down but retains the same poignancy and intensity of the advanced version. It is also playable without a low C instrument via cues.
The piece is to be performed rubato. While there are no tempo markings, it is imperative that each section of the piece is distinct from the last (i.e. getting more intense towards the soaring climax) in terms of rhythm, tempo, and dynamic relationships."
