From the composer:
'When a loved one is gone, physically, whether that be through death or a temporary absence, love endures, causing a deep longing in our hearts. While on this earth, we can connect with our loved ones in their absence through many means: a letter or email, a phone call, a video. However, nothing beats that in-person touch, the warmth of an embrace, and that unity we feel with our loved ones when we are physically together. When our loved one has gone from this world, we experience an almost crippling pain of loss, but there is hope. We can still connect with them through our thoughts and our memories of them, carrying on their traditions, and through prayer. Love transcends time and space. “It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:7
Endurance depicts a loving relationship—the beautiful harmony of being united, and the longing felt when they are physically separated. The use of trumpet mutes and flugelhorn portrays separation and distance from a loved one. Endurance was commissioned by Katrina Clements and Spencer Brand, a married couple who has endured the challenge of physical separation, taking jobs in different states. Representing Katrina’s environment, I used tritonic and tetratonic scales to depict the Native American music indigenous to South Dakota. For Spencer’s environment, I used the jazz idiom to depict the musical traditions of Louisiana.'
