'The idea of this collection of orchestral excerpts with piano accompaniment stems from the undeniable importance covered by the bass clarinet in the opera repertoire — symphonic, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the use of the bass clarinet in the orchestra. In this regard, it is thoroughly important that the performer has a good knowledge of the orchestral excerpt that accompanies the soloist so as to be able to fully identify himself in the role.
The collection has been assembled with the purpose of making it useful to study and acquire orchestral excerpts, as well as for the actual performance. For this reason, every orchestral excerpt has been carefully transcribed and arranged to be performed as a concert. It is worth recalling that the bass clarinet has an exceptionally dark-sounding and deep tone, and that it was first used by Saverio Mercadante in the innovative opera "Emma of Antioch" in Naples in 1835 during the premiere at the "Teatro Real San Carlo". The instrument was later used by Meyerbeer in "The Huguenots, "Giuseppe Verdi's Aida, Ernani, La Forza del Destino, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Strauss and so forth. I sincerely hope that the readers of this book will find its content enriching and useful as all attempts have been made to contribute to sharing the beauty of music springing from the pleasurable sounds of the bass clarinet.'
