From the composer:
"Pistacchio verde was commissioned by the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. The commission reached me in a time of an extreme workload, and, as is often the case when one is busy or stressed out: either one smokes or one eats. I have opted for the latter, hence the title “green pistachio.”
The quartet begins with a four-bar introductory section (lento). In bar 5 (Veloce e ben ritmato) the exposition begins with a very rhythmical theme; this section ends in bar 54 with the bass clarinet reaching a forte C (written pitch). This C (Legato, diminuendo molto fino a pp) leads to the central development section. In this section a melodic cell wandering between the four clarinets is accompanied by tone repetitions and fourth, fifth, sixth and octave leaps. Playing with accents and their interlacing and shifting results in an almost trancelike atmosphere and in afro-minimalist polyrhythms. This central section culminates in a tutti ff bar 90 and in a f (written pitch) in the bass clarinet’s sff in bar 91.
In bar 92 the recapitulation begins. In bar 109 the 1st and 2nd clarinets lead to the coda in unison. In bar 120 there is a dynamic surprise: a sudden fp. The three B-flat clarinets accompany the E-flat [(alto)] clarinet, whose melody culminates in a sustained d (written pitch) in bar 124.
The bass clarinet opens the final cadence with a ff c (written pitch). After a sequence of glissandos, culminating in bar 128 in a unison tutti, the quartet ends in a virtuoso, lively and spirited manner."
