From the composer:
"The piece is shaped as a Baroque dance suite, with a prelude and five traditional (stylized) dances. Some dances are much closer to a true Baroque style; some draw more equally from the Baroque inspiration and modern materials.
The minuet is the only dance that departs from the traditional meter - in this case, compound triple rather than simple triple. This choice was intentional in order to provide a counterexample to Edwin Gordon's belief that what is traditionally called triple meter does exist as a meaningful concept since it can always be conceptualized as compound duple. Hence, all of the phrasing and hypermeter at all levels is intentionally in threes.
Few articulations and no dynamics are marked throughout the piece - this is not meant to imply that there should be no expression, but rather to force the performers to explore and make their own musical decisions. Although most of the piece is repeated, efforts should be made so that the repeat is different! Experiment with different dynamic shapes, articulations, ornamentation, etc. - improvisation is strongly encouraged!"
