Paul Prudent Jeanjean (1874 – 1929) was a French clarinettist and composer. This edition of Carnival of Venice is a reprint of what was originally published as Brillantes variations sur "Le Carnival de Venise" in 1900 by E. Gaudet. It uses the same Italian folk song popularized by Paganini's variations from the early 19th century. Jeanjean's flamboyant opening cadenza sets the tone for the dazzling technical display that follows in four variations and a finale. Blistering arpeggios and leaps constitute most of the technical demands, and the range mostly stays below the altissimo register (the highest note is a written F6). The work is almost completely in the key of B♭ major, with only one variation in the parallel B ♭ minor, and time signatures are solely 3/4 and 6/8.
The score is in concert pitch. This edition doesn't have any bar numbers, but you can get them right here.
