From the preface:
"This organ chorale with solo clarinet is an arrangement by the clarinetist Irith Gabriely, who wrote the clarinet part and cadenza in memory of Elke Mascha Blankenburg.
The formal structure is like that of a Jewish prayer or the dead. The solo clarinet takes the role of the prayer leader in Jewish tradition, with the organ imitating the response from the congregation in the synagogue. The prayer leader intones and the people sing in response: the work thus acquires the character of a Judeo-Christian psalm. At the end there is a cadenza; a free solo clarinet improvisation may be played instead ad libitum, followed by a solo organ improvisation too if desired."
