This edition consists of a collection of 3 works for B-flat clarinet and piano by Heinrich Baermann, edited by Madelyn Moore:
Andante con duolore
Concertstück (also known as Divertissement for Clarinet & Orchestra, Op. 38)
Divertimento for Clarinet & Orchestra, Op. 35Heinrich Joseph Baermann (1784 – 1847) was a German clarinettist and composer. In addition to his famous role as a source of inspiration for such esteemed composers as Weber and Mendelssohn, Baermann wrote his own works for clarinet. The pieces in this collection are largely virtuosic in nature; the Andante is the shortest (at 5 minutes) and has the easiest technique, while the Divertimento is the most demanding with its longer length of 16 minutes and sheer density of notes. With a difficulty in the middle of the other two, the Concertstück also presents the most melodic material of the works. The editor states her hope that "...by studying and performing these works, clarinetist will gain a better understanding of one of our most important predecessors. His ideas about rhythm and phrase shape can help musicians understand how this nineteenth-century virtuoso viewed musicality and style."
A preface provides brief brief remarks about the origins of the works. Suggested changes in volume, articulation, and breathing have been made by the editor on both the score and clarinet part; in such cases, dynamics and breath marks are in marked parenthesis, and slurs are made with dotted lines. More context about the works and Moore's process can be found in her dissertation. The score has a transposed clarinet part, so it is possible to read/perform directly.
