From the prologue:
"Up to now, the D clarinet has not seen much attention in books, encyclopedias and studies. Therefore, this book gives a unique overview about the D clarinet and the Johann Melchior Molter Clarinet Concerto No. 1 A major.
During the last century, the D clarinet has become less important besides the often-used E-flat clarinet. This is caused by the specialization for one side instrument in orchestras (E-flat clarinet, Bass clarinet, Piccolo flute, Oboe d'amore, Contrabassoon) and by the educational system at universities. For a good cause this book combines both, available knowledge with practical knowledge of a professional D and E-flat clarinetist. The book shows that the importance of playing the D clarinet increased again over the last decades.

This nonfiction book is designed in such a way that the reader can start with his or her favorite chapter, without having previous knowledge. On the one hand, the reader will enlarge his knowledge about the D clarinet and the Molter Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in A major. On the other hand, D clarinetists might use it as a handbook, when interpreting music originally written for the instrument."
