From the composer:
"As you have no doubt discovered, the little fingers frequently become tangled in the keys. Almost all difficult passages for the clarinet involve the little fingers. These are the weakest fingers, and they cover the toughest spot on the clarinet.
During my career, I've been scared stiff so many times by tricky little finger passages that I decided to do something about it. As I came upon them, I collected a number of these little finger headaches from various sources and expanded them into special exercises.
The metronome markings are important. Practice each exercise at a very slow tempo until mastered; then move the metronome one degree faster and repeat the process. The results from such patient, systematic, self-inflicted cruelty are positively amazing.
The extreme tempos are marked only to indicate to you the speed at which a virtuoso clarinetist could perform them. While you may encounter considerable bad luck wrestling with these studies, it is sincerely hoped that your little fingers will not become permanently paralyzed.
No matter what happens, you will find these studies of no musical value unless you listen intently to your tone. As you must know, technique, no matter how terrific, is worthless unless accompanied by a pleasing tone, a smooth legato and clean cut tonguing."
