Gerald Raphael Finzi (1901 – 1956) was an English composer. In 1938, he wrote three pieces that would eventually become the Five Bagatelles. After adding a fourth piece by January 1942, they were first performed on January 15, 1943 by Pauline Juler and Howard Ferguson in the National Gallery, London, England. Later discussion with publisher Leslie Boosey (of Boosey & Hawkes) resulted in an additional final movement, and it was premiered by Juler and Ferguson in its full form at the same location in February 1944. This edition was published in 2012.
Although within the reach of amateurs and developing clarinettists, the fine crafting of phrases, touches of fugal writing, and numerous modulations make the Bagatelles rewarding for seasoned performers. The work presents a particularly effective mixture of folk-like melodies and brilliant, dance-like material, and its movements could be programmed individually.
