Gerald Raphael Finzi (1901–1956) was an English composer. The Clarinet Concerto was written in 1948-49, and is dedicated to Pauline Juler. She originally intended to give the premiere performance, but was forced to cede that role on account of her impending marriage. Frederick Thurston performed the premiere, instead, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer at the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford, England on September 9, 1949. This edition was published in 1951.
Like the Five Bagatelles, Finzi provides the clarinetist with plenty of opportunities to craft lyrical and elegiac melodies, befitting the composer's often pastoral image. These withdrawn moments are contrasted nicely with more nimble writing, heard most in the rousing final movement. From the very first measure of the clarinet part, pristine intonation reveals itself as a prominent demand, especially in the first two movements. Frequent changes in key and meter along with a particularly active orchestral accompaniment lend the work a sense of spontaneity.
