Ernesto Cavallini (1807 – 1874) was an Italian clarinettist and composer.
The Carnevale de Venezia was first published in 1854 by Shlesinger (Berlin), and is dedicated "Al Signor Teodoro Gillet dal suo amico [Ernesto Cavallini.]" It was premiered by Cavallini in December of the previous year in Chahlottenburg. Cavallini's adaptation uses the same Italian folk song popularized by Paganini's variations from the early 19th century.Quick facts
Range: highest pitch = written G6
Key signature: no ♯/♭
Time signature: 6/8Besides the sweeping scales and arpeggios, a majority of the impressive virtuosity comes through relentless wide leaps, a couple of them hitting the highest pitch of a written altissimo G6. The entire work is in the time signature of 6/8 and the written key of C major. Note that the posted duration of 7.5 minutes is without any repeats, since many performers choose to omit them (for their own endurance, or to tighten up the work for a program); all of the variations except number 7 are marked repeated. With all repeats taken, the average duration is 12.75 minutes.
A preface in English, German, and French provides a brief biography of the composer. The score has a transposed clarinet part, so it is possible to read/perform directly. This edition doesn't have any bar numbers, but you can get them right here.
