"Ackerbatics was written for clarinetist Dr. Amanda McCandless as a remembrance of her father, an avid fan of Acker Bilk. Bilk, the popular and iconic clarinetist and band leader of the 1950s and ‘60s whose instrumental recording Stranger on the Shore was a top ten hit in both the UK and the US, had an immediately recognizable performance style with his wide use of vibrato. While internationally famous for the ballad Stranger on the Shore, many of his recordings are in a Dixieland style and performed with his Paramount Jazz Band. Ackerbatics is an athletic but deconstructed play on Bilk’s song style and vibrato techniques. As an added bit of athleticism, the piece requires the performer to play the hi-hat as well as the clarinet."
