The five sources used in preparing this edition date from the 18th and 19th centuries: (1) Anna Magdalena Bach's manuscript copy, (2) Johann Peter Kellner's manuscript copy, (3 and 4) anonymous copies from later 18th century, and (5) first print edition.
The critical report booklet compares the editorial value of the sources, and provides context on performance practice, including form and structure, cello technique at the time of the work's conception, articulation, ornaments, dynamics, and appogiaturas.
