From the composer:
"10 Estudos Brasileiros (10 Brazilian Etudes) is a collection that reflects my passion for Brazilian music and my interest in the technical and musical development of the clarinet. Each etude was written with a focus on enhancing the technical and expressive capabilities of the instrument while also capturing the character and nuances of Brazilian music. These etudes are freely inspired by the styles they are named after, not intending to be exact representations but rather to capture elements and characteristics that evoke each style.
Based on celebrated etude books such as those by Rose, Klosé, Cavallini, Jeanjean, and many others, the Brazilian etudes work on fundamentals such as scales, arpeggios, rhythmic fluency, varied articulations, dynamic changes, and phrasing. Each one of them presents its own distinctive character, with varying levels of difficulty from one to another. Some focus more on technical skill and agility, such as etude no. 8, "Frevo." Others prioritize phrasing and expressiveness, like etude no. 4, "Canção."
As a clarinetist, I sought to write in an idiomatic way for the instrument, where, no matter how technically challenging the passages are, with proper practice, they can "fit" into the hands of the performer, allowing the music to manifest in a fluid, expressive, and authentic way. The articulations and indications are there to help the performer emphasize the traditional performance practice and rhythmic feel of each style. Those already familiar with Brazilian music performance practices are encouraged to express themselves freely and incorporate their individuality and musical temperament as they see fit.
It is with immense joy that I share this material inspired by the music of my country. My greatest hope is that clarinetists who dedicate themselves to learning these etudes not only work on their technique and musicality but also feel a closer connection to the musical landscape of Brazil."
